I came across this post on the rsync mailing list. Looks like someone has created a new version of rsync that understands HFS+ but can communicate with any other rsync server (i.e. unlike rsynx it isn’t limited to talking only to Mac OS X rsync servers). More information can be found here.
Definitely looks like alpha/beta quality software right now but I really hope the developer continues the work.
